Palm Tree Flag of Kanem
OriginThe flag comes from the sea chart drawn in Majorca in 1339 by Angelino Dulcert, where it marks Kanem, the state that ruled the lands around Lake Chad. It belongs to the earliest group of cases in which a European chart gave a flag to a kingdom south of the Sahara. The drawing shown here is a modern redrawing of that chart emblem, not a surviving banner.
DescriptionA single green palm stands on a white field, set well over toward the right-hand side. Its thick trunk rises straight from the lower part of the field without reaching the bottom edge, and about halfway up it opens into a crown of fronds that reach out in every direction, each leaf cut into sharp saw-like teeth. The flag is straight along its right side and narrows to a single point at the left; the tree fills almost the whole height of the field, while the tapering left half is left empty, and apart from the palm the white ground carries nothing at all. The palm is the tree of the oases and date groves along the caravan routes across the Sahara, and here it stands in for a whole country on its own.
