2. Where the content comes from
Country facts are built from open data: mledoze/countries, World Bank Open Data, UN Data, Wikidata and Natural Earth. Flag images come from Flagpedia (flagcdn.com) and Wikimedia Commons. Coat of arms images come from Wikimedia Commons, and the author and licence of each of those files are listed in the website’s About / Licenses screen.
Facts such as capitals, population figures, memberships of international organisations and the law that defines a flag are checked against cited sources, most of them publications of governments, national statistics offices and international organisations. Each of these facts is shown with its source and the date it was last checked; a fact that cannot be traced to a source is hidden rather than guessed. Labels show where a status is disputed or de facto, and maps are simplified for learning rather than drawn as legal boundaries.
The full list of data sources and licences is in the Terms of Use (section 7) and in the website’s About / Licenses screen. If you spot a mistake, please tell us and include a source.
