Great arms of the Principality of Monaco
OriginThe design of a red and white diamond-patterned shield supported by two monks holding swords is the great arms of the Principality of Monaco. The story of the disguise as monks in 1297 is a tradition handed down in the Grimaldi family.
DescriptionA shield of alternating red and white diamonds is held up from either side by two bearded figures in brown monk's habits, each raising a sword. Above it are a gold crown lined with red and an ermine mantle, and below are a ribbon reading 'DEO JUVANTE' and an order's chain woven with green wreaths together with the cross of the order.
