Surya Majapahit (Sun of Majapahit)
OriginThis solar motif turns up again and again in the ruins of Majapahit, the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that held eastern Java and the sea routes of the archipelago from the 13th to the 16th century. It was carved above all into shrine ceilings and stone slabs, and because it recurs from site to site it came to stand for the kingdom itself. The colourful version known today is a later drawing; what survives in the ruins is uncoloured stone relief.
DescriptionEight golden rays, layered like feathers, reach out to the eight directions, and where each of them springs from the disc a red stone is set — eight stones ringing it. Inside them a ring is cut into eight compartments — black at the top, then clockwise blue, white, pink, red, orange, yellow and green — and in every compartment a golden deity sits turned toward its own quarter of the world. At the hub, on a violet disc before a rainbow halo, sits Shiva, to whom the centre belongs. Sun, eight directions and centre are stacked into one image: the whole cosmos held in a single order.
