Coat of Arms of Gran Colombia
OriginIn 1819 the congress led by Simon Bolivar proclaimed the liberated north of South America a single Republic of Colombia, and in 1821 the congress at Cucuta fixed these arms by law. The state that later historians called Gran Colombia broke into separate countries around 1830, and its emblem went with it. The picture here is a modern redrawing of that design.
DescriptionAt the centre stands a bundle of lances lashed with crossed brown bands, a row of steel points showing along its top, and a long lance rising through it whose crosswise blade carries a broad axe edge on one side and a sharp point on the other: the old sign that what is bound together cannot be broken, and a mark of the republic's authority. Two golden horns of plenty open upward on either side and cross their tips at the foot. From the left, among pale yellow leaves, spill grapes, a red apple, a green pear, a peach, a plum and a hand of bananas, with a spray of red berries rising above them; from the right, pineapple, banana, coconut, sugar cane, oranges, strawberries and ears of wheat, so that the harvest of the cool highlands and of the hot lowlands is heaped up together. Behind the bundle a bow and three arrows cross, their flights painted yellow, blue and red, and a ribbon in the same three colours is knotted at the base around a small round cockade. The white band around the oval carries, in black letters, the name the state used for itself, REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA, closed at the bottom by a six-pointed star.
