Flag of Buganda
OriginBuganda is a kingdom on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, ruled by a king called the Kabaka, and it was the largest of the states gathered into modern Uganda. Uganda's government drove the Kabaka into exile in 1966 and abolished the kingdoms the year after; the kingship was restored in 1993 as a cultural institution, and the kingdom keeps its own flag. The design sets the emblem of the kingdom — shield, spears and lion — at the centre of a blue and white field.
DescriptionThree upright bands of equal width run blue, white, blue, and every figure gathers in the white middle. There stands a long oval shield pointed at top and bottom: yellow, rimmed in orange, with four purple stripes ruled down the right half as you look at it and a single orange disc set at its centre. Two spears cross behind it in an X, their leaf-shaped heads rising above the shield while the shafts run out below. Underneath lies a golden lion with a dark mane, its body turned toward the hoist and its forepaws stretched out in front, while its face looks straight out at the viewer; the shield and spears speak of the kingdom's defence, the lion of the king's dignity.
