Coat of Arms of Siam
OriginKing Chulalongkorn (Rama V) adopted this emblem in 1873, borrowing the forms of European heraldry to give his kingdom a symbol that outsiders would read at a glance. It stood for Siam through the decades when the kingdom was reshaping itself as a modern state, appearing on royal standards, decorations and official documents. In 1910 his successor, Rama VI, set it aside and replaced it with the Garuda emblem Thailand still uses.
DescriptionThe shield is divided in three. The gold upper field carries Erawan, the white three-headed elephant of Siam, standing on a plinth; the red field below left holds a single white elephant in gold trappings for Lan Xang (Laos); the pink field below right shows two crossed kris, the wavy-bladed daggers of the Malay dependencies. Above the shield rises the Great Crown of Victory against a burst of golden rays, and beneath it hangs the discus-and-trident emblem of the Chakri dynasty. Behind the shield cross the royal regalia — the Sword of Victory, the royal staff, the fan and the flywhisk — their gilt tips showing past the cream mantle, over which a broad pink riband loops. Two white lions support the shield, the left one bearing an elephant's trunk, each holding up a seven-tiered golden umbrella; the red ribbon below carries a Pali motto meaning that unity brings prosperity, with a medal bearing the king's portrait hanging from it.
